What news on Brexit?

I spread  English news (specially the Guardian and The Evening Standard, but also BBC News) trying to understand what's going on about Brexit.
I don't think Brexit must be considered an English domestic affair, since it involves Scotland, Northen Ireland and the rest of Europe.
Of course I respect the decision of British people, included the original referendum held in June 2016.
Nevertheless allow me to express my doubts about the democratic process gone on until now to bring UK out of European Union.
First of all I want to say that politician must also listen what Scotland has to say about Brexit. It's a really historic paradox that England wants to be out of Europe while Scotland, despite the Hadrian Wall, likes instead to be in.
Secondly let me say that there are several shadows hanging over the 2016 referendum, won by little porcentage by the Leavers. Has British people correctly infromed over the cosequences of voting leave? It seems It has not, since the survey recently show that people were not rightly infromed; as a matter of fact the public opinion now sees a majority proremaining in the E.U..
Last but not least let me say that Europe needs its British brothers staying in. Do you remember Jo Cox, the English MP killed by a far right fanatic leaver? Would be her blood lost invane?

Still over Brexit

In the papers,  in the last weeks,  we don't get so much news over Brexit. Nevertheless there is more Brexit than we think. British are learning that Brexit is not that good that seemed to be on June 2016.
The horrible news coming from Northern Ireland are a consequence of that disgraceful referendum.
As an European citizen I feel sorry and as a peaceful man I would like UK staying in the EU as a garantee for a progressive, democratic growth of the United States of Europe.
I know I'm too old to hope to see the political Union of our Continent; but let me hope that our sons might be able to see them.
I embrace all the Europeans, including my brother British. Stay together, in peace, English, Scottish and Irish brothers. And if you can, stay still with us.

Please don't go

Please don't go away
We share the same history
Our roots are merged
in a common mud
made of blood, of sweat, of love.

We have walked together
since that day Julius Caesar
discovered that my land and your land
were just parts of the same unity.

Please don't go:
we need each other
we need to minge together
our fantasy and your cleverness
our genius and your greatness.

Europe won't be
the same without you
Albion sons, Cox brothers:
just don't go away.

To Brexit or not to Brexit - 2

I want to spend a few words in favour of British people, whatever might be the decision on Brexit (it seems yes, since now, but you never know).
That's a decision who is up on British governement and I'll respect it, whatever it might be.
British people are good people. I know English people more than Irish and more than Scottish, even more than Welsh people. And I'm sure that English people are good people.
If some of them have thought to go out of European Union they might have good reasons.
British people are not selfish people; but they are not silly nor stupid.
May be they are simply fed up with this kind of European Union. And so am I.
Of course I would be glad if Great Britain would stay with us to fight against European burocracy in order to change EU.
I still remain a believer in European Union, I mean in the Union of all European people to be happier and whealthier together. I feel all the European people are brothers and they must increase this brotherhood creating a common market, a common governement and sharing a unique flag without renouncing to their peculiarity and their identity.
I dream of the United State of Europe with the United Kingdom, that means with English, Welsh, Scottish and irish people.
I have this dream and I'm not going to give it up.

To exit or no to exit

Yesterday, half a million  people, marched  in London against the Brexit.
I've already written in this blog what I think of this theme.
I love all UK, its people, its multinational culture, its different, strong tradition whatever they might decide to do on Brexit. Even if  they would be out of EU I would keep on loving and respecting their great democracy and their great Country.
Nevertheless I  hope that Great Britain remains in the European Union.
We need them as well as they need us to be together.
United Kingdom, English, Scottish and Irish people are part of Europe.
The European, different people, like English, French, Spanish, Italians, Germans, Danish and all the others, are like those cousins which have a common inheritance to share: it's better to find an agreement and keep on together.
We have already fight too much to conquer and manage on our own, exluding the others, the whole inheritance and it has been a disaster.
Who does not remember the cruel wars the ones against the others? How many have them been? I cannot even count them out since the Roman Empire has collapsed, almost sixteen centuries ago.
That's enough my  European friend.
I want we to stay together, with our differences, with our peculiarities, defending our own culture but sharing our friendship, building a new great Country to face the new millennial challenges against the giants of the world (I don't only mean USA, but also China, India and the others emergeing, dangerous  powers).
And I can't forget the sweet face of Helen Joanne Cox who has died for the European dream to be true.
Please, don't let her blood sacrifice be useless.
I embrace you, brothers of Albion. Do what you think is better for you but don't forget that together we'll be stronger. Europe is strong if we keep together though someone would prefer to split us.
The good things to joint are much more than those to break up.
And London is for ever, anyway.

London for ever - 9

According to a recent survey, reported by the yesterday's Guardian news, 60% of British people want to mantain the EU rights even through Brexit process.
I'm glad of that for I still believe that UK is part o Europe: forst of all from a cultural point of view; but also economically and historically speaking.
I think that we don't have to be afraid of exalting our differences amid the  European memberships (of course I'm generally speaking now, for I know Brexit is hardly a revoking subject at the moment);
I mean that French, Spanish, Germans, Italians, must proud of their specific characters and they never have to neglect them.
But all together, with our own peculiar specificity, we need to work for a stronger Europe, to be alble to face the challenges in the next decades. First of all we must fill the space will be left by USA in the world wide scenario. Secondly we have to face the new arising econimies: such a giants like China, Brazil, India, SouthAfrica and even Russia itself can't be faced by UK, Germany or France  on their own.
Further more we need British by our side side, with their language, their culture, their experience.
Please, people of Europe, let fall your walls of suspicion and  forget your dreams of greatness. In the globalized world there is no primary role  for small country, how much  full of ancient glory they might be.
We can make a great empire of Europe, but only all toghether.
Politicians fron all over the Europe, great descendants of great leaders, be worthy of your ancestors, and please keep on dreaming with folk and not by yourselves.
And London is still for ever!

One year ago

One year ago (and two days) Jo Cox was shot dead by a right far fanatic who didn't agree her committment in politic and social subjects.
Joanne Cox was a MP for the Labours and when the crazy man assaulted her, she was busy in her Constituency for the coming referendum to decide if UK had to stay or to leave European Union.
As we all know British choose to leave. But this doesn't matter, in the end. I mean that I keep on feeling sentiments of brotherhood to British people though they decided to leave.
The day before yesterday some people have seen their bravery recongnised by great british honours: two policemen and two other people who helped Jo Cox against the blind violence of hate who took her life away.
A foundation has now been founded in the name of Jo Cox (see the link below).
I don't know if this foundation is also pro European Union but I'm sure it is not against anyone.
And this is what it's important at the best.
I have not known Jo Cox when she was alive but I know she was for solidarity, brotherhood and friendship all over the world and not only in Europe.
And I still say that London is for ever.

Thank you Lords

It  invites us to a serious reflection the amendment the Lords have inserted in  the Brexit bill in order to protect three millions of EU citizens, working and living in UK, after Artcle 50 is triggered.

What I expected  was to be done by the  House of Commons It has been done instead by the House of Lords.

It is a widespread belief, even abroad, that  Lords are  people of privileges,  living in the past,  insensitive and rich enough to snub all the rest of the world, indifferent to anybody'else problems.

I don't know if that's true.

What I know for sure it's that yesterday 358 (against 256) of them vote an amendment to secure the acquired rights of 3 millions of EU citizens living in UK.

But why such a vote is surprising?

I'll try to answer this question.

In my opinion as the Commoners were afraid  to lose the political consent by the voters, they voted, on both fronts (tories and labs) giving carte blanche to Government on Brexit bill.

The sad truth is that inspite we rant about democracy, a forum of no elected people (The Lords, as matter of fact) remember the world, with their amendment,  the real basis of morality and principles of human rights.

And in times of trumps, lepens and various despots, pushed by blind populism, it's not really a poor thing.

And anyway, I told you  various times that London is forever.

A Brotherhood of European People

I feel it's a real shame the exit of Great Britain from European Union. Of course I totally respect the decision taken by British People the last 23rd of June but  let my dreams soar in the sky. I have dreamed of a Great Europe where the Italians start studying English language at six and French Schools teach italian culture in one with their own culture and together with the other European stories and knowledge. And I've dreamed of a unique country from the Adrian Wall to the Atlantic Ocean and from there to Sicily and up to River Rhine in Deutchland...
Sorry to be a dreamer but I can't live with out.
And once you have known It London is for ever.

And now the United States of Europe

I hope our English friends (also for the memory of our dear MP Jo Cox) will have a thought back on their self harm decision to go out the EU, but now it's the time to close our ranks and make a political stronger European  Union.
The single states must put apart their selfishness (specially Germany and France) and understand that the the transfer of portion of sovereignity to the European Union is in the interest of all.
Please leave off your antiquated ideas of "grandeur" (if we measure with that comparision, each one of us can recall a shadow of greatness from the past; the Italians with the Roman Empire, the Austrians with the Asburgic Empire, not only the French with Napoleon) and please start working for the United States of Europe.

The European blood

I must confess that until Thursday, the  16th of June,  I had followed the debate on Brexit in an almost indifferent mood.

"That's domestic, internal, British affair" I used to say  to myself.

In short, I was waiting the 23rd of  June ready to accept the outcome of the referendum for what it would be.

I've always thought that the English (a little 'less the Scots and the Northern Irish) were inside the European Union without  any real conviction, with the head standing on the the Atlantic's  major issues and the feet   in the Mediterranean, but only to control us closely, enjoying only the economic benefits of the  European market.

But after the barbaric killing of Labour MP Helen Joanne "Jo" Cox I changed my mind.

Now I feel that England (but this should be extended to the whole of Great Britain) is an indissoluble part of the European Union.

Now I look forward to the outcome of the close referendum.

Now I know that if the death of Jo Cox will tip the scales on the "no" to Brexit (and then on the permanence of the United Kingdom in  the EU), the valiant  Labour MP   did not die in vain.

For her I will continue to be a convinced European.

But from now on I will consider Britain an integral and true part of our European Union.

Let's stay together,  European brothers, stick in our common Christian roots. Without hatred and without racism, but with our well-defined  identity.

It will be easier to deal with those who come from outside and profess another religion if we rediscover our spirituality. I'm not afraid of the Muslims, the Buddhists, the Hindus or the Jews, even though as a Christian (and Catholic in this case) I  rest firmly in my convictions, attached to my roots.

We stick together, to cope against the resurgence neo-Nazis, which lead to hatred, intolerance and violence.

Let's stay united to face any kind of fanaticism and do not allow the unquenchable thirst for spirituality that afflicts humans since the dawn of civilization, be filled with dark mysteries, with vacuous quackery and stray spells, or with false and superficial esoteric convictions.

Beyond all religious convictions (I do not know  anything about the religiosity of Jo Cox but I know that  faith is still a personal matter) Jo Cox was an example of seriousness and commitment in politics and society. An example to follow by all Europeans.

Time will tell us if Jo Cox has contributed with his innocent blood to build a Europe more united and supportive. And if in the great book of our Europe will have the recognition she deserves to have.

One thing is certain: Jo Cox will forever have  an important place in my heart.

Thanks Jo, for what you were and for the example that you have been able to give, while you were alive, with your commitment in favour to the most vulnerable and marginalized.

The hand which  wanted to suppress your ideas has done nothing but give wings to those same ideas, which now fly, free, in the most sensitive and mature minds of your Great Britain and of our Europe.

Yet another demonstration of how useless and foolish are all forms of violence.

Brexit-III

Meanwhile sterling has slid to its lowest lever against the dollar in the last seven years. And many big companies in Britain have expressed the choose to remain in. These are part of the result for fearing Brexit.
It's useless to say the the political destiny of Mr Cameron is now in the polls.
It's very hard to imagine his staying still in Dowining street if he looses his campaign for UK remaining in the European Union.
Now the debate between the two parties, pro Brexit and against, is getting warmer.
The Brexiters say UK will become greater again out of the European club. They also add that economic adavantages can be provided by bilateral agreements as many other countries have done with the EU; and they quote Canada, South Korea, India, China and many others.
Nevertheless observers note that bilateral economic treaties might not work the same with Great Britain. Furthermore there is much more involving of EU in the fight against terrorism that Britain could not achieve on its own.
It seems to me that most of the Brexiters issues are only nothing but a nostalgic dream over a greatness which can be reached only staying inside the European Union.
And this is woth also for France and Germany.
But the road for an integrated political EU is still hard; just paved with good intentions, at the very moment.
I still believe, none the same, the European Union has a great future: with or without English people.
3. the end.

Brexit -2

Britons already voted once the same issue in 1975, but that was another EU. At that time EU was still formed by only 9 members and the strict laces which today smother number 10 Downing were yet to come.
Today EU it's more bound to run after the six founder's dream: to become a federation of states with increasing power to the centre and less margins of sovereignity to the single states.
It's this the major worry of conservative's brexiters and fundamentally almost all the average  English media class people.
But pay attention please! We are talking of English people only!
And here start Mr Cameron politic ploblems involved with the poll appointment in june!
Scots have already claimed the call of new referendum to leave the British Union if Brexiters win! And same have made the Northern Irish which threats the reunification with Dublin's  Republic if Brexiters will be the majority.
And another  great amount of problems are coming for mr Cameron on the financial  and economic side both inside and outside the British borders.

The European Constitution

My dear Friend, after the cruel facts of Paris, who saw the death of seventeen people, I would like to offer you my following reflections. Primarily an embrace and condolences to  the entire French nation. Someone one day said " I'm don't agree with you, but I would fight to  death  for your right to say it"

You see, my friend, I don't agree on what   Charlie Hebdo publish about religious items, even in my youthness I used to like  religious and  political satire, but what Islamic fanatics have done  in Paris last week, at the redactionne of that satirical juornal, reminds me of the great masters of thought of the Enlightenment.

In Paris the assassins have fired on our history, our culture, our time. I'm Practicing Catholic, but I also believe that's a great value to be able to choose between to believe and not to believe

Islamic terrorists killed the Charlie's vignettistes but  they did not kill the achievements of our civilization and our freedom.

There is a gap between our culture and  those of the other continents of the world, those of other civilizations of the earth; but if we make a correct comparison we must speak of Christian culture from one hand and Islamic culture on the other.

And now the question is: who is going to  fill the gap that separates our civilizations?

I believe that would be a mistake to think that Islamic need to live their own age of Enlightment or, even worse,  than we should give up our achievements of liberty.

And so? I think we Europeans we must report to the Islamists as Christians: both are civilizations and we must compare, trying to understand each other. I lived in Italy the epic of terrorists; there was, at that time, someone who said that the terrorists were mistaking  companionsI don't know  if also Islamic terrorists are brothers who are wrong (that's a problem to be solved inside the Islamic culture); but I think that we, Europeans, all together, we need to be united to better relate to other cultures.

Let's adavance with the  European Union, then, my friend. Let's drop the differences e mistrust between us and let's walk all together, not against, but forword to other cultures, affirming and confirming our cultural acquisitions. I embrace you and sent my best wishes for a 2015 full of happiness.
