Are males better than females?

The never solved question has recently rised in scope chess and aroused an outcry as GM's UK player Nigel Short was quoted to declare that men are more suitable than females on playing chess.

The quarrel is ancient like humanhood. Nigel Short, as matter of fact, said he was misunderstood as ho wanted just say the men and women are different and act with different skills, sometimes superiors to those of men.

According to a recent  scientific report in Pennsylvania University, women usually work with both brain's hemispheres while men seem to privilige the right hemisphere.

Personally  I think that both sexes do excel in something and that they are simply complentary one each other.

It's a useless competition try to make a rank of classification to establish which one is the better.

Eventually never forget that between the two litigants has the third, as the proverb says.

Chess mirror of life

It seems that also in Chessgame people are loosing the path of the ancient roman Ulpiano's maxim "honeste vivere et neminem laedere".

Leo Benedictus takes opportunity from an unpleasant occasion, which recently took place in Abu Dhabi, during the international chess tournement, to make a subtle analysis of both contemporanean society and chess GM's way of life.

The matter is related with the use (and with the abuse) of elettronical machines and sophisticated tools such as i-pads, i-phones,mobile telephones and various computering machines which so much have spread anywhere, in schools and working places, changing so deeply our habits.

Of course we agree with him when he says we must keep on going on a right behaviour in our day's competences, as well as in sports or in freetimes activicties, though is more and more difficult to do.

For those who love chess, furthermore, is not pleasant to see the cheateangs and frauding are affecting also playgames and sports.

Engineer's delight

"It is a great profession. There is the fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer's high privilege.
The great liability of the engineer compared to men of other professions is that his works are out in the open where all can see them. His acts, step by step, are in hard substance. He cannot bury his mistakes in the grave like the doctors. He cannot argue them into thin air or blame the judge like the lawyers. He cannot, like the architects, cover his failures with trees and vines. He cannot, like the politicians, screen his shortcomings by blaming his opponents and hope the people will forget. The engineer simply cannot deny he did it. If his works do not work, he is damned...

On the other hand, unlike the doctor his is not a life among the weak. Unlike the soldier, destruction is not his purpose. Unlike the lawyer, quarrels are not his daily bread. To the engineer falls the job of clothing the bare bones of science with life, comfort, and hope. No doubt as years go by the people forget which engineer did it, even if they ever knew. Or some politician puts hs name on it. Or they credit it to some promoter who used other people's money . . . But the engineer himself looks back at the the unending stream of goodness which flows from his successes with satisfactions that few professions may know. And the verdict of his fellow professionals is all the accolade he wants."

The European Constitution

My dear Friend, after the cruel facts of Paris, who saw the death of seventeen people, I would like to offer you my following reflections. Primarily an embrace and condolences to  the entire French nation. Someone one day said " I'm don't agree with you, but I would fight to  death  for your right to say it"

You see, my friend, I don't agree on what   Charlie Hebdo publish about religious items, even in my youthness I used to like  religious and  political satire, but what Islamic fanatics have done  in Paris last week, at the redactionne of that satirical juornal, reminds me of the great masters of thought of the Enlightenment.

In Paris the assassins have fired on our history, our culture, our time. I'm Practicing Catholic, but I also believe that's a great value to be able to choose between to believe and not to believe

Islamic terrorists killed the Charlie's vignettistes but  they did not kill the achievements of our civilization and our freedom.

There is a gap between our culture and  those of the other continents of the world, those of other civilizations of the earth; but if we make a correct comparison we must speak of Christian culture from one hand and Islamic culture on the other.

And now the question is: who is going to  fill the gap that separates our civilizations?

I believe that would be a mistake to think that Islamic need to live their own age of Enlightment or, even worse,  than we should give up our achievements of liberty.

And so? I think we Europeans we must report to the Islamists as Christians: both are civilizations and we must compare, trying to understand each other. I lived in Italy the epic of terrorists; there was, at that time, someone who said that the terrorists were mistaking  companionsI don't know  if also Islamic terrorists are brothers who are wrong (that's a problem to be solved inside the Islamic culture); but I think that we, Europeans, all together, we need to be united to better relate to other cultures.

Let's adavance with the  European Union, then, my friend. Let's drop the differences e mistrust between us and let's walk all together, not against, but forword to other cultures, affirming and confirming our cultural acquisitions. I embrace you and sent my best wishes for a 2015 full of happiness.

Amazed by Jesus

I was a shepherd
longtime ago
somewhere in Bethlehem
watching my sheeps

Though I was waiting
for Someone to come
I could believe
only my sight

Then I saw a light
sparkling 'n  the sky
I heard a voice
singing with joy

I joined the star
aimed to see
the Glory of God
the King of glee

 I'm still astonished
looking today
 as Jesus wanted
choosing to stay

The least of poorness
 neatness of magic
 plenty with nothingness
the brilliance of love

Please leave me Jesus
the eyes of a child
looking  the Crib
wondering while.

Late reply from Cagliari - 1

Dear Elem, fourty-five years have gone past since you wrote me from Cornwall.
I've been surely answering you, in some way, somewhen. But I'm sure my reply have been cast in the phobias and contradictions of my juvenescence.
How are you, anyway?
We are both quite old ones now, aren't we? While adolescence is such a wonderful age, isn't it?
What I wanted to tell you is that you are also so handsome to me!!! And that Cornwall is so beatiful, and I will be soon coming to see you, with or without a friend for Carol!!!
But our teens are so silly and shy, my dear friend!!!
It does n't really matter what you might be doing now, but I'm going to come to see you over there!
Can you imagine it, Elem?
Oh, probably you wont recognize the handsome boy you wrote I was.
Now I'm an old, slightlyfat and almost  hairless man...
Don't worry, elem, I would send you a picture of me before leaving...though I realize you might not be there anymore... in theRock at Wadebridgre...
Let's say that. if you answer this letter, it will mean that you still there... Oh that would be fantastic!!!
'See you seen my dear Elem. Love form Cagliari, Sardinia. Reply soon if you can. George

Love from Cornwall - 2

Dear George,
thank you very much for your letter and photograph. I think you look very sweet.

I have a friend called Carol who would like an Italian boy penfriend. If you know anyone who would like an english girl penfriend (aged about 15), please send me his name and adress and i will give them to Carol. She will be very happy, because she hopes he will be as handsome, as she says, you are.

I must change my handwriting now, because my father does not like the former style. Do not think that you have a different penfriend, or something. It's still Elem (Lee) writing to you.

I have been swimming a lot lately and i have been taking the people for whom I work to the beach.

Do you realise that our letters take about eight days to reach their destination?

I'm working in a shop all the holydays. it sells shoes, clothes, and all kinds of golfing equipments and the people there are very nice.

Tomorrow we finish school for seven weeks.

August 25th there is a big party in a large field. all the money goes to the Church. I have been chosen to paint all the notices.

Do you like to sing? At Christmas time I am alaways chosen to sing in a church service. I think that singing is for enjoyment. but my parents seem to think it is nice for me to sing and so I do.

I hope you like this postcard of Rock. the golf course is a little behind the trees.

Reply soon, Love Elem.
