         - It's enough now! Listen to this circular: it comes from the Presidency!

First student

         - What's this about, teach?

Prof Loi

         - The object is "Reality Show at The Mattei Institut".

Fourth student (addressed to the teacher)

         - What do you mean, prof?

Prof Loi

         - If you please allow  me to read it... I don't know anything about it either... It is addressed to the students and teachers of your class : "We hereby inform the students of the third cycle and  the teachers of the  Course that the class has been chosen for the realization of a project that the Ministry of Education has developed in collaboration with the television network "Video Time Plus" of the Media Plus  International Group. Therefore, a TV crew will set up special cameras that will broadcast, without interruption, what is happening in the classroom, from the sound of the first bell at 8:30 a.m. to the final bell at 1:30 p.m.; mobile cameras will also follow the classroom or part of the students in their movements during the yard’s breaktime. “

Fifth student

         - Wow!!!

First student

         - Cool guys!!!

Second Student

         - Finally we are going to  live! Let’s Go!!!

Prof Loi (beating his fist on the desk)

         - If you  let me finish reading, may you’ll understand better!!! (the professor resumes reading once silence is obtained)

“ Today, the official of the television network Dr. Mario Giannetti and the director of the program Maria Compagnangelo will come to the classroom to explain the rules of the Reality Show and how it is carried out. Please cooperate as much as possible, because the success of this important initiative is linked to significant funding for our school. “

Signed authentically by our School Manager Professor Franco Olianesu

First student (exchanging a five with numerous companions)

         - Let’s Go!!!! We're on the ether!!

Second Student

         - An Hurray for master Olianesu!!!

Third student

         - And for our classroom: hip, hip HURRAY!!!

Fourth student.

         - But couldn't they give us the money??? Why do they give it to the school?

Fifth student

         - Paolo's right!

Sixth student

         - We're the actors, not the headmaster!!

Tenth student

         - But who cares about the money!!! As long as we are going to appear on television!!!!

Eleventh student

         - Of course!!!! We'll all be stars!!!

Eighth Student

         - Oh, but how is going to manage  Professor De Lussu when she has got to answer to  her cell phone with the cameras pointed at her??

(general laughter)

Ninth student

         - And Professor Nugnes is going to keep his computer on all the time?

Prof Loi (pandering to the students' game)

         - How are you guys going to  copy from those cell phones during classwork?

Sixth student

         - No way, teacher! We never copy!

Prof Loi

         - Oh, yeah!  When I go around the desks like a  watchdog! Let's say it suits you better when a teacher indulges your desire of doing  nothing!

Seventh student

         - What's that got to do with it? We don't get paid like you surely do to come to school!!!!

Prof Loi

         - Whatever! Any excuse to get out of the studio!!

(Rings the recreation bell. The students rush noisily out of the classroom).

Prof Loi

         - Go, go and recreate yourselves! That's the thing you do better!

Prologue

Somewhere in the space the Latin poet Virgil and the Italian poet Dante meet again, after almost seven hundred years, for starting a new journey on the universe of human vices and virtues.

Virgil will lead Dante Alighieri, as a guide, across the space-time, through as many different levels of the human vices, as many centuries have passed by from their first journey.

They will travel together through the hell of desperation up to the hope of repentance of purgatory. At the third level Dante eventually meets Beatrice who will lead him to the true love shore of Paradise.

Scene 1

Dante and Virgil

An aseptic room. On the left a door communicates outside. On the right a spiral staircase leads upside where the spaceship waits for Virgil and Dante to go. In a total darkness the creak of an opening door. Dante will desperately call for his master Virgil.

Dante (a frightened voice in the darkness): May I come in? Is anyone there? Schoolmaster! Are you there? Please answer me… for God’s sake…

After a short but heavy silence’s time, a scrubbing sound of a lighting match will be heard in the darkness. Then a candle will light an old man sit down at a table covered by piles of books, papers and maps.

Virgil (after reawakening, he lights the candle ): I must have fallen asleep…Who is in there?

Dante (still trembling): Is you, master?

Virgil: (going to meet Dante, hardly recognizes his friend, lighting his face) Dante…? My son! Why are you so shattered and distraught? What happened to you?

Dante (getting closer to his master, almost crying in a mixture of joy and relief ) Oh, Virgil, masterly teacher of my trembling soul… if you only knew what I have gone through…

Virgil (placing his candle on the table, embracing him with affection): It’s all right now, my son…

Dante (falling on his arms, starts crying and sobbing): It has been really very hard outside there, in the darkness… I saw death in the face…

Virgil (l.b.): Please, take a sit, my son… It’s all over now…

Dante (reacquiring some trust): Thanks to God I’m with you now…

Virgil (l.b. pouring a glass of water from a jar on the table) Of course… It will be all right now… Please have some water…

Dante (drinking with desire the water): I have escaped three horrible beasts…

Virgil: Have you?

Dante (trembling again and looking afraid at the door): Yes… A tiger, a serpent and a monkey persecuted me up to here…

Virgil: Be calm now… they can’t surely get inside here…

Dante (reassured he looks gratefully at Virgil): I know they can’t my sweet master…

Virgil (with a gesture of affection): Forget about everything now…Are you still determined to take over our journey?

Dante (with a sigh of relief): More than ever master! With you by my side I can face anything fearless!

Virgil: (pointing out the spiral staircase) Don’t you fear to face a long and risky journey through the Universe with that spaceship?

Dante: Not at all, master! I told you: I’m ready to go anywhere with you by my side!

Virgil (taking a map on his hands): Let’s talk about it then! Everything is ready… I’ll show you…Do you know what is this?

Dante (bending on the map): Well … I see two cones turned upside down …

Virgil: Come on! It’s an astronomic figure!

Dante: I’m sorry…It might be a double cone diagram …

Virgil: That’s better. The bottom cone represents the past and the light cone, instead, is future! The point where the apices meet is the present; so we are here now, can you see it?

Dante (pointing the map): Yes master, I surely can! But what is this kind of spiral down here?

Virgil: The Great Spiral contains all the human’s history, since our brain can retain trace of it…Every concentric circle corresponds to a century time… the inner you go to the center, the nearer you get closer to our ancestral roots, do you get me?

Dante (with a thrill of excitement): That’s makes me feel a bit lost…It’s all so stately… so magnificent…

Virgil: Of course it is! We are talking about the space-time…That’s what the spiral really represents…

Dante (like lost in the clouds): That’s would be fantastic…

Virgil (preventing and reassuring him ): It’s out of our route to travel the warped direction… we’ll walk the expanding direction instead… with our spaceship we’ll intersect the space time right here (he points up with a finger the map)… at the beginning of the fourteenth century and from there we’ll continue towards the present;

Dante (surprised and excited): But that’s the anniversary of my exile from Florence!

Virgil (with an accomplishing smile): Of course! Right the 1302… Don’t you want to know what happened after your left the town?

Dante (enthusiastically): So I’ll be able to see my beloved wife?

Virgil (beating him dear on his head): Have you forgotten we are going to visit the Hell? You’ll see her in Paradise! Or at least in the Purgatory realms…

Dante (disappointed but thoughtful): I’m sorry master… I didn’t forget it but for a while I thought it might me a sort of passageway in the way to hell… ‘you know?

Virgil: Not at all, my son. Look! All along the spiral’s arms we’ll find the different circles of Hell; in its last part we’ll be in the so called Ante Hell; but here (he points the map again), where the final part of the spiral almost touches the present’s point we’ll aim the peaks of Purgatory…

Dante (with lively curiosity): so I may argue that the Hell is in the same dimension of past life?

Virgil (complying with satisfaction): That’s right my dear learner. As a matter of fact the right established punishment for the sinners is to stay in the unhappy condition of human life forever, without evolving in a better life like we’ll see for the Purgatory and, above all, for the praised of Paradise!

Dante: I see…

Virgil: Don’t be disappointed. Can’t you imagine a worse punishment than sharing your own time only with the evil without any good at all?

Dante ( thoughtfully): Of course you’re right…

Virgil: Put it this way: you’ll be able to see your enemies… those who exiled you… lost forever in their thirst of power, in the vacuity of their nothingness… and those who betrayed you…

Dante: I’m not sure to want such a revenge…

Virgil: That goes to your praise and merit…Aren’t you curious about the destiny of the big priest Boniface? Charles landless Valois? And what about Raniero Zaccaria?

Dante: (sadly) I would prefer to forget them!

Virgil: You don’t have to stop forcedly with them…We can decide the first stop in advance by the on board controls…

Dante: Do you mean we can land anywhere in the spiral lines of space-time?

Virgil: That’s exactly what I mean!

Dante: I fear to face events too close to my own story.

Virgil: There’s no problem, my son. We can go straight way to any of the circles of any century!

Dante: As far as I know something about some good guys I could really go further. Can I know only a few names before we go?

Virgil: Go ahead with the names please!

Dante: (thirstily) Giovanni Boccaccio, Cino da Pistoia, Pieraccio Tebaldi, Bosone da Gubbio, Geoffrey Chaucer, Johannes Gutenberg and his pupil Johann Numeister!

Virgil: You’ll find them all in the Purgatory or maybe in the eternal joy of Paradise!

Dante (with a sigh of relief): I think they deserve it, don’t you master?

Virgil: It’s not up to me to decide, not even to discuss such matters…

Dante: I’m sorry master…

Virgil (overflying any argument): Have you got any other name?

Dante: Can you just tell me something about a certain Francesco, the son of my friend, the notary Ser Petracco?

Virgil: Despite everything he has deserved to play another chance to reach Paradise..at least for literary merits… Don’t you think so?

Dante (bewildered, pedantly listing): Well, I surely prefer Rinaldo Cavalchini, Menghino Mezzani, Manuello Romano, Giovanni Quirini, Angelo Poliziano, Luigi Pulci, Lorenzo di Pietro, Giovanni di Paolo, Cristoforo Landino, Franco Sacchetti, Leonardo Bruni, Francesco da Barberino and…

Virgil: (cutting him straight) That’s ok, my son! I have got your point of view! You may like to make our first stop further in the sixteenth or less...

Dante (changing attitude, almost apologizing): Oh, the sixteenth is my favorite one..so full of art…discoveries…new ideas…

Virgil: I’m with you… you can start from there our journey… if you want to…

Dante: Well, it depends from the people we might find over there…in the lines of the infernal spiral I mean…

Virgil: You can make some names…;

Dante: I have a great number in mind…

Virgil: Make ten of them… just to start…

Dante: Let me see… I would start with… Martin Luther, Nicolaus Copernicus, Leonardo Da Vinci, Niccolò Machiavelli, Michelangelo Buonarroti, William Barker, John Calvin, Sandro Botticcelli, Tintoretto, Luca Marenzio…

Virgil: All in Paradise!

Dante: That’s good!

Virgil: Any more names?

Dante: Oh, I’ve a great copy… Why don’t you tell me, master, some names worth to be heard? I would be so grateful…

Virgil: (surprised): Well, there are really plenty. What do you think of Hernan Cortes?

Dante: Do you mean the Spanish conquistador?

Virgil: That’s him, my son…

Dante (a bit upset): Speaking about Spanish people I would prefer to talk with Diego Guillén de Avila, Pedro Fernandes de Villegas or with Pedro de Padilla, ‘you see?

Virgil: Well, of course I see, but they are all guys of Paradise…

Dante (quite mortified):I’m really sorry, master;

Virgil (with resolution): Never mind! Do you have any other names?

Dante: if I were assured about some other figures I would ask you to start straight to the beginning of the seventeenth century…

Virgil: Whom would you like to know of?

Dante: Raffaello Sanzio, Giorgio Vasari, Sir Francis Drake, Amerigo Vespucci, Giovanni Bellini, Adriano Bancheri, Anne Boleyn, John Calvin, Catherine de Medici, Mary Queen of Scots, Charles the Fifth, Nostradamus, Ivan the Terrible, GianPierLuigi da Palestrina, Michel de Montaigne…

Virgil: All of them out of the Great Spiral except for Francis Drake, Nostradamus and Ivan the Terrible!

Dante: (very thoughtful) I’m in two minds… I’m not sure I want to stop just for three names…May I ask for any others?

Virgil: Come on with your last names then!

Dante (in one breath): Oliver Cromwell, Johannes Keplero, William Shakespeare, Cervantes, John Donne, Francis Bacon, Renè Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, Walter Releigh, Mazarino and Richelieu…

Virgil: Only Richelieu and Mazarino have got trapped on the Infernal spiral! But all these names lead us straight to the seventeenth century!

Dante: Very well! I’m ready for the 17th century now!

Virgil: Let’s go then!

(while they go towards to the staircase which leads to the spaceship the lights will be off)

Final Essay in Little Verona

Third Act

(A public place. While waiting for Charlie Dealer, Norma Nursey sings her song)

Scene I

Norma’s Song

How much longer

Will be women pretending

To be submitted to men’s power?

How much longer

we will have to devise our tricks

to get our rights?

How much longer

Will we have to wait

For our liberation?

Scene II

(Norma N. and Charlie Dealer)

Charlie Dealer (looking around warily; he wears a leather black jacket, sun glasses and a sort of jeans trousers with heavy boots; when he sees Norma approaches indifferently murmuring): Chocolate, mushrooms, brown sugar, grass, speed, anything is cheap! First quality!

Norma N. : Charlie Dealer?

Charlie D. : So they say! Who are you ma’am?

Norma N: For that fake death, ‘you remember?

Charlie D. : Yes, of course! Though yours is not an easy case…

Norma N. : I don’t mind at the expense…

Charlie D. : If you really don’t, ma’am, you got the right person in front of you!

Norma N. (impatiently) : What do you propose?

Charlie D. : I’ll tell you what! (rummaging in his pockets he shows a small package and a vial) You take a gram of atropine belladonna and after twenty four hours insert in an ear of the fake dead ten drops of water hemlock from this vial and the game is done.

Norma N. : Does it really work?

Charlie D. : Surely it does! I’ve tried myself to cheat a few insurance companies!!!

Norma N.: And did you get the money?

Charlie D.: Oh, not me ma’am! My wives and my kids did!

Norma N.: Your wives?

Charlie D. : Yes. I’ve been married several times. Thanks to this stuff I avoided the payments of aliments and could start a new life each time!

Norma N.: A good way to disappear!

Charlie D. : Yes, but every time I appear again, though with a different name.

Norma N. : I see… Well, let’s make the deal! (gives a roll of banknotes and takes the stuff).

Exit Charlie D. with a wave of greeting

Scene III

(Norma and Flora)

Flora (coming breathless) : My lady! Come quick at home, please!

Norma N. (frightened): What happened ? For God’s sake, I pray you to talk soon!

Flora (agitated and upset, almost incapable to speak): A great disgrace happened…

Norma N. (like before with impatience shaking her by the shoulders): What disgrace? Calm down and talk!

Flora (trying to calm herself but still trembling): Paris Da Porto came home…

Norma N. (not understanding, almost with relief): What’s a matter with this? It doesn’t look such a disgrace!

Flora: But Mariotto was already in there, waiting for Lavinia to come down…

Norma N. (starting to understand): And then?

Flora: Paris told him a fucking nigger couldn’t be waiting for his fiancée…They quarreled…

Norma N.: What do you mean “they quarreled”?

Flora: They got scammed and when Paris was about to succumb he pulled out knife from his pocket…

Norma N. (with despair) Oh no! The poor Mariotto! And poor Lavinia…He’s still alive?

Flora: Mariotto or Paris?

Norma N . : You sound like a sphinx today! Are you going to tell me what happened in my house at last?

Flora: Struggling strenuously, the knife struck in the heart of Paris…

Norma N.: Is he dead?

Flora: I immediately rushed to warn you but on my faith he seemed to me hit to death!

Norma N (realizing quickly) : That’s really a great disgrace! Let’s rush at the scene! (pointing a dust bin and giving her the lot she purchased from Charlie D.) Just throw away all this.

Flora: What is it madam?

Norma N.: Just bloody stuff! Don’t worry e rush after me! We must join the others in the School!

Exeunt

Scene IV

The scene is in the Hall of The Drama School, like in First Scene of Act Two. Papa John Brook, Norma Nursey, Geena, Mel, Leslie, Ralph, David, Patrick, Susan, Ellen, Ada, Lawrence ,Henry, James, Edna, Basil, Reginald. All the students, Norma Nursey and Papa John Brook are ‘playing the original characters

PJB: (continuing his proposal of the first scene of the Second Act) : How do you like this Final Essay in Little Verona?

James (convinced but not completely): In West Side Story there are more songs…

Basil: (thoughtfully): The story reminds me something…

Henry: How does the story end?

PJB: (amused by the questions) Let’s ask the interested characters. Mel what are you going to as Mariotto after quarrelling with Paris?

Mel: (irresolutely) I would be in two minds…to flee or not to flee…

Geena: (tenderly) Would not you agree with me what to do my love?

Mel (resolutely): I certainly would my dear!

Norma N. (fiercely): You are not old in vain! I would give my contribution!

PJB: Do you see, Henry? The end is still to be made up!

Leslie: Let’s make an happy end, please!

Edna: A tragic end is perhaps more appropriate…

PJB: (mysteriously): Tiger father begets tiger son.

Ellen: What do you mean by that, JB?

PJB: I’ll tell you what. Please seat down everybody and I’ll tell you a story.(all sit down on the floor) Did anybody know that West side story has been inspired by The most excellent and lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliette ?

Susan: The William Shakespeare’s famous Tragedy ‘ you mean?

PJB: Properly that one!

Patrick: I think I’ve heard of it…

PJB: Never mind! Probably you knew it. But who knows that Shakespeare drew on other and numerous literary sources to set up his famous tragedy?

Ralph: I can’t believe it! Such a great man?

PJB: The fact does not diminish his greatness, believe me!

David: Where the hell could Old Billy take such a story?

PJB: Surely Shakespeare based his drama on the Arthur Brooke’s Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet. And the great poet Brooke was inspired by three different sources: a novel composed by Matteo Bandello, an Italian author, written in 1554, a story in a collection called Il Novellino, by the widely-popular fifteenth-century writer Masuccio Salernitano, and the Story Newly Found of two Noble Lovers, written by Luigi Da Porto and published in 1530.

Leaving apart the popular tale of Romeo and Juliet by William Painter’s collection Palace of Pleasure which influenced even more directly the greatest dramatist of all centuries in modern history!

Reginald: (half joking) Hey man, what did you suggest to us as your stuff?

Basil: I wouldn’t say that! “Libris ex libris” it’s what they say!

PJB: You are right! And dramas from dramas I dare to add!

Geena: Where the names Lavinia and Mariotto came from then?

PJB: Right from those Italian stories, my dear!

Mel: (pretending to be hurt): Did you want to make fun of us?

PJB: Oh, for no reason in the world! I just wanted to show you the importance of knowing history!

Norma N. (supporting JB): And also the meaning of the slogan you proposed for our Final Essay!

PJB: Of course. Do you remember?: “Theater , for its own nature, must keep telling a different thing from what it shows!

Ada: I convinced myself! Let’s play this drama as our Final Essay!

Geena: Yes! I’m with you!!

Lawrence: Let’s sing Hip hip hooray for JB!

All together they will voice hip hip hooray for JB and will bring it in triumph.

PJB: Be quiet! I need to be all sane for continuing the proves!

Chorus: Hip, Hip, Hooray! (like above)

PJB: And don’t be late at work tomorrow!

Exeunt all but Bill Dauber

Scene V

Bill’s Song (The sad song)

Forgive me my outburst and my rage!

I wonder why in every tale

Of any musical and stage

They all undervalue love amid a male

And a male? We’re put apart

Emotionless, no dignity, no tenderness!

But our love nevertheless

flows out from a beating hurt.

Don’t think our love is different

We fall in love so naturally

My soul kept bleeding sad and silent.

Be sure that I will

For the love that I feel

blame myself to the Police

For Paris’s kill

‘cause my lot is sacrifice! (Exit Bill Dauber)

Scene VI

(the scene resumes the action from the events described by PJB in the third scene)(Geena, Mel, Norma N. and Flora)

As Bill Dauber finishes his song the lights will show Mel Baron with his hands on his face and Geena trying to comfort him.

Mel: I swear I didn’t want to hurt him…It wasn’t my fault…I only defended myself…

Geena: Don’t worry my dear I believe you … and also the Police will believe you…

Flora (overtaking Norma): I can testify it was legitimate defense! I saw everything: from the moment he offended you until he pulled the knife out of his pocket!

Mel (like before): I’m sorry… though he called dirty nigger…

Geena: What an ignoble expression!

Mel: maybe I should run away and hide ... the police will not believe me because I'm black

Norma N. : No, Mel! I don’t think this is the best thing to do…The times are achanging and we have a frank witness in your favour!

Geena: And papa knows more than a good lawyer, doesn’t he mama?

Noema N. : He does for sure my darling…be brave and confident my son…

Mel: (surprised) Do you know of me and Geena?

Norma N. : (reassuring): Geena told me everything!

Mel: (shy and doubtful) And you have accepted me? Though I’m a colored man…

Norma N. : Of course I have! Enough with the legacies of the past!

Mel : But Mr Bandello….

Norma N. : Mr Bandello is going to do what their women will decide is to be done! You can count on it!

Mel (embracing Geena): Thank you for these words madam…

Norma N. : You can call me Norma Mel! You’ll be part of our family!

Geena: Thanks ma’!

Norma N. (in a tone of convinced exaltation) The time of love has come! Love must conquer every heart from now on! These are the new words! Flora, please call everybody to sing the new words!

Scene VII

(All the students and Papa JB will join the quartet and start to sig the Love’s son. Firstly will sing the quartet; secondly all the women and eventually all together)

It’ time to love, love, love

We want to love, love, love,

We need to love, love, love,

Let’s gather and love, love, love

The life is love, love , love

The love is one, one, one

Let’s fall in love, love, love

Ad libitum until

The End
